The survey asks respondents about working conditions, corporate culture, and how employees are treated. Responses are then analyzed to identify award winners and determine rankings. The awards aim to recognize and spotlight the best places to work in Chicago. To be considered for a spot on the list, companies must: Be a public or privately held company Be for-profit, government entity, or not-for-profit business Have a facility in the Chicago area (which includes the counties of DuPage, Lake in Illinois, Lake in Indiana, McHenry, Will, or Cook) Employ a minimum of 25 full-time or part-time employees who work in Chicago Be an operating business for a minimum of one year Finalists, and their rank, are determined by a two-step process. The awards program is designed to identify, recognize and honor the 100 best companies to work for in Chicago.  Winners were determined by the results of a weighted survey of employees and employers, conducted by Crain’s in partnership with Best Companies Group. To be considered for participation, companies had to: Be a publicly or privately held business Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business, or government entity Have a facility in the Chicago area (including the counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake in Illinois, Lake in Indiana, McHenry or Will) Have a minimum of 25 full-time or part-time employees working in Chicago Have been in business a minimum of one year Determining the Best Places to Work in Chicago involved a two-step process. The first step consisted of evaluating each participating company’s workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of employee surveys aimed at assessing the experiences and attitudes of individual employees with respect to their workplace. This part was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the best companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process and analyzed the data and used its expertise to determine the final ranking. Most CEOs Say Enterprise Risk Management Programs are Ineffective

CHICAGO - Dec. 10, 2019 - LogicGate, an agile process automation platform enabling organizations to operationalize governance, risk, and compliance programs, announced today the results of its “The 2020 State of ERM: A View from the Top” report. The report, which discusses the results of a survey of 100 CEOs across industries on their understanding of enterprise risk management (ERM) and their current ERM programs, found more than half of CEOs think their ERM program is not as effective as it should be. With companies experiencing an increase in risks and data breaches, it’s no surprise the report uncovered that 88% of CEOs think ERM is very or extremely important. However, while most companies have an ERM program in place, there’s little agreement as to what a successful program really looks like in practice, beyond the baseline features. Fortunately, CEOs are beginning to understand the need for their involvement in their company’s ERM program with 66% wanting more involvement. “It’s not a matter of if your company will face risk, it’s a matter of when, and which risks. Every business faces risks, and without a strategy in place, you are setting your company up for failure,” said Matt Kunkel, CEO, LogicGate. “For CEOs to become more involved with ERM, they must integrate ERM in their business decision-making process and create a culture of risk. The responsibility of ERM does not fall only on the IT or compliance departments, it involves every employee and every department.”  The CEOs surveyed echo this sentiment, asserting a clear desire for increased visibility into risks and a quantifiable methodology for tracking and evaluating them. Several CEOs lamented the “labor-intensive” process in their organizations and voiced a need for a “better understanding of what it’s costing us to mitigate risk.” They also recognize a need for “regimented” and “streamlined” methods of factoring risk into their overall business strategies.    Looking ahead to the rest of 2019 and 2020, CEOs are most concerned with risks in three categories: Strategic, Operational, and Macroeconomic risks.  1 in 3 CEOs see Strategic Risk as the “Biggest Potential Risk Concern.” Among Strategic Risks, risk arising from key business partners is most frequently ranked first.  1 in 3 CEOs are most concerned about Operational Risk. In this category, cybersecurity is the top concern due to the increase in cyber threats. Finally, of the CEOs most worried about macroeconomic trends, 1 in 4 are most worried about the threat of a recession. Global political instability was close behind.  Other key takeaways from the report include:  CEOs at smaller firms are significantly less satisfied with their ERM programs, with 1 in 3 finding them not very or not at all effective. CEOs are the least satisfied with the ongoing monitoring of ERM, particularly firms with <$250M in terms of having risk KRIs tracked by a central team. About 3 in 4 CEOs rate their risk identification favorably, although fewer CEOs in the core industries of financial services, healthcare, and technology, media, and telecom report cross-functional team involvement. Information security leads ERM for 3 out of 10 CEOs, followed by finance, risk, and the board of directors.  Most CEOs meet with their ERM leader at least weekly, or daily in larger firms. Data for this study was gathered by LogicGate through an online survey obtaining quantitative and qualitative responses. Survey respondents were screened for the type of business, annual revenue, and employee size. LogicGate Hosts CodeDay 2019

CodeDay inspires youth interest in coding and computer science, particularly among students from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM careers.

On November 9 and 10, LogicGate hosted 70 students for an overnight hackathon as part of SRND CodeDay 2019. LogicGate employees welcomed the young coders into their corporate home and served as volunteer mentors and judges. SRND, short for Student Research and Development, hosts CodeDay to inspire youth interest in coding and computer science, particularly among students from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM careers. Each event encourages creativity, teamwork, and fun as small groups of young people ages 12–25 solve coding challenges over the course of 24 hours. Participants include both novices and experts, and SRND reports that 80% of beginners continue to pursue computer programming after the event. Students pitched ideas for apps or games they want to build, then spent the next 24 hours bringing their ideas to life. At the start of the event on Saturday morning, novices attended a beginner workshop before diving into their projects, while intermediate and advanced-level participants got to work right away.  Mentor Duties All groups were paired with a dedicated LogicGate mentor who provided project feedback and guidance—as well as the occasional nudge to get groups thinking creatively. Mentors challenged groups to use a specific programming language or technology during a dedicated lab period. For example, if a team wants to make a game with Unity, mentors might introduce a python framework instead. This portion of the event encouraged participants to learn a new technology or try out a novel approach, though each group is free to use whatever tools it likes once the lab period is over.  "The level of maturity demonstrated in many of the projects for this competition was impressive,” said Mark Lello, Software Engineer at LogicGate. “Seeing young people come together to ideate, design, and develop solutions which help impact society for better social good and awareness was something I was proud to see from Chicago's young tech community." On top of group leadership duties, LogicGate’s employees ran workshops and offered skills coaching to help the students to round out their skill sets. In the Networking session, some of the older students learned about STEM career paths and professional etiquette. In the Project Management session, LogicGate mentors taught students how to set goals and achieve milestones.  The Winners Are… At the conclusion of the event on Sunday, students shook off sleepiness and presented their final projects. LogicGate judges met each of the teams, tried out their projects, and ultimately declared a winner. The “Best in Show” top prize was awarded to a group whose app automatically splits large files, and “Best Game” went to a group who coded a game to work on a scientific calculator. Other notable entrants included a message encryption service, a chat bot to help kids at risk of depression, and a social experiment designed to warn of the dangers of giving up passwords. All participants came away from the event knowing something they didn’t know before.
